AM5 or LGA1851: which platform should you build on?

Updated · Tech Store Europe

Short version: for gaming, a Ryzen X3D chip on AMD’s AM5 socket is the strongest pick, and AM5 also has the longer upgrade path. Intel’s LGA1851 suits builders who value built-in Thunderbolt or strong multithreaded performance at a given price.

The two platforms

AMD’s Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000 chips fit AM5 boards, while Intel Core Ultra desktop chips, the Core Ultra 200S Plus refresh among them, need an LGA1851 board. Both use DDR5 memory and nothing else.

Gaming

Processors with AMD 3D V-Cache dominate gaming benchmarks. In Tom’s Hardware testing, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D finished well ahead of the Core Ultra 9 285K across a large set of games at 1080p, and the 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D matched the 9800X3D almost exactly. The gap is widest when the processor is the limit, such as 1080p with a fast graphics card. At 1440p and 4K the graphics card carries more of the load and the difference narrows.

Creative and multithreaded work

Intel’s top Core Ultra chips are strong in rendering and other heavily threaded tasks, beating the eight-core 9800X3D by a wide margin in Cinebench. On the AMD side, the 16-core Ryzen 9 models are the fair comparison. Results vary a lot by application, so look up benchmarks for the software you actually use.

Upgrade path

AMD has said AM5 will be supported through 2027 and beyond, and later reporting points to support continuing into 2029. A board bought now should take future Ryzen chips after a BIOS update. Intel has added the Core Ultra 200S Plus models to LGA1851, but it has made no commitment about the socket for later generations, so treat today’s processor as the last big upgrade for that board.

Chipsets in brief

Tier AM5 LGA1851
Entry A620, B840 H810
Mainstream B650, B850 B860
Enthusiast X670E, X870, X870E (USB4 on X870/X870E) Z890 (CPU overclocking)

Memory and coolers

On AM5 a two-module DDR5 kit at 6000 with CL30 timings is a common target, set up through an EXPO profile. Intel rates Core Ultra chips for higher DDR5 speeds, and compatible boards also accept CUDIMM modules. Coolers carry over well: most AM4 coolers fit AM5, and most LGA1700 coolers fit LGA1851.

Our recommendation by use

  • Gaming first: a Ryzen 7 X3D chip on a B850 board.
  • Gaming and heavy editing: a Ryzen 9 X3D, or a Core Ultra 9 where your editing software runs better on Intel.
  • Thunderbolt peripherals: LGA1851 with a board that exposes Thunderbolt ports.
  • Tight budget now, upgrade later: a Ryzen 7000 processor on AM5.

Next step: size the power supply for your graphics card.
